Exclusive Tesla Model S Signature Edition Hits Market Above Retail Price

A rare example of the recently discontinued Tesla Model S has surfaced at a New Jersey dealership with an asking price significantly higher than its original sticker cost. Listed at $260,490 by J&S Autohaus in Ewing, the vehicle represents a substantial markup over the $159,420 price point Tesla established for the model earlier this year.

The vehicle in question is part of the Model S Signature Edition, a limited-run variant created to commemorate the end of production for the Model S and Model X lines. Restricted to just 250 units through an invite-only sales process, this version serves as a capstone to the legacy of the Model S, which has been central to Tesla’s automotive strategy since its 2012 debut.

Beyond the standard Plaid architecture, the Signature Edition includes specific cosmetic and mechanical enhancements. These features consist of Garnet Red exterior paint, gold badging, and white Alcantara interior upholstery with gold piping. Mechanically, the vehicle is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and gold calipers. Performance metrics for the trilogy-motor powertrain remain high, with approximately 1,020 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of under two seconds.

The listing arrives amid controversy regarding Tesla’s sales terms for this specific series. The automaker implemented a strict “No Resale Agreement” for these farewell models, prohibiting owners from selling the vehicle within the first year of ownership. The contract stipulates a penalty of $50,000 or the total value of the transaction, whichever is greater, should the agreement be violated.

Additionally, Tesla’s terms specify that transferrable warranties would carry over to a new owner, but premium software benefits—including Full Self-Driving (Supervised), free lifetime Supercharging, and Premium Connectivity—would be terminated immediately upon transfer of title. This reported resale attempt comes roughly two months after Tesla began delivering these units, potentially setting the stage for the company to enforce its contractual restrictions.

What to watch

  • Future legal or administrative action from Tesla regarding the enforcement of its no-resale clause.
  • Market activity regarding remaining Model S and Model X Signature Edition units.
  • Tesla’s upcoming financial disclosures and production guidance.
