Honda Replaces Google Assistant with Gemini AI in US Vehicle Overhaul

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is initiating a significant software update for its U.S. fleet, shifting away from the standard Google Assistant in favor of the more advanced Google Gemini artificial intelligence. This over-the-air update targets models equipped with Google built-in technology, marking a step toward more sophisticated in-car voice interaction.

The core improvement lies in the assistant’s ability to process natural language. Unlike previous systems that relied on rigid, specific voice commands, Gemini is engineered to comprehend context and handle complex, multi-part requests. This allows drivers to ask for nuanced recommendations, such as locating a highly-rated outdoor lunch spot along a specific route, without needing to phrase the query in a precise, robotic manner.

Eligibility for the update includes a wide range of recent and upcoming products. The list encompasses the 2023 and newer Accord Touring Hybrid, 2025 and newer Civic Sport Touring Hybrid, Civic Si, and Civic Hatchback Sport Touring Hybrid. Additionally, all 2024 and newer Prologue EVs are included, along with the 2026 CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid, Passport, Pilot, and the upcoming Prelude.

The update also introduces Gemini Live, a feature designed to facilitate free-flowing, hands-free conversation. By using the prompt “Hey Google, let’s talk,” occupants can engage in extended dialogues for purposes such as vacation planning, brainstorming, or receiving summaries of news updates. Honda positions this as a convenience enhancement aimed at keeping drivers’ hands on the wheel while interacting with the vehicle’s infotainment system.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. currently trades with a market capitalization of approximately $36.13 billion. As a major player in the Consumer Cyclical sector, the integration of advanced AI into its automobile business reflects a broader industry trend toward software-defined vehicle experiences.

What to watch

  • Rollout completion and customer feedback regarding Gemini’s natural language processing accuracy.
  • Adoption rates of Google built-in features across the eligible Honda and Acura model lines.
  • Future software updates leveraging generative AI for other vehicle systems.
