Subaru Recalls 541,000 SUVs Due to Incorrect Axle Weight Labels

Subaru has initiated a large-scale recall affecting 541,237 vehicles across several popular SUV lines. The campaign targets specific model years of the Ascent, Forester, and Crosstrek Hybrid due to a compliance issue regarding federally required certification labels.

The recall encompasses 2019 through 2026 Ascent models, 2025 through 2026 Foresters, 2025 through 2026 Forester Hybrids, and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. The core of the issue is not a mechanical defect but a misprint on the safety certification label. These labels display an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), causing the vehicles to fall out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110.

While the vehicles themselves are mechanically sound, the discrepancy poses a potential safety risk. If drivers rely on the erroneous label, they may unknowingly load the vehicle with cargo or passengers exceeding the rear axle’s actual capacity. This could increase the likelihood of a crash. Subaru has stated that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or warranty claims connected to this labeling error.

The automaker has not disclosed the specific figures printed on the wrong labels versus the correct ratings, making it difficult to gauge the severity of the discrepancy. The issue was brought to light by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which raised concerns in May. Following the administration’s inquiry, Subaru conducted a comprehensive review of calculated GAWR values for vehicles dating back to the 2003 model year before deciding on the recall.

In an unusual move for a safety recall, the remedy will be handled directly by owners. Subaru plans to mail corrected overlay stickers to vehicle owners, who can then affix them over the existing label themselves.

This situation highlights the rigorous regulatory environment automakers navigate. While less severe than a mechanical failure, labeling recalls have impacted other manufacturers recently. In May 2024, Rivian Automotive, Inc. recalled 127 R1S vehicles over missing certification stickers.
