Tesla Semi Pilot Program Expands to Midwest With Paper Transport Partnership
Tesla, Inc. is broadening the operational testing of its commercial electric truck through a new pilot program with Paper Transport, LLC (PTI). The Wisconsin-based logistics provider will integrate the Tesla Semi into its fleet for dedicated routes within the Chicago market, a move that places the vehicle in a region known for severe winter weather.
Unlike previous evaluations in warmer climates, this initiative exposes the Long Range configuration to the harsh cold and heavy snowfall typical of a Midwestern winter. This environment provides a rigorous stress test for the truck’s battery performance and reliability in low-temperature conditions. The data gathered will be crucial as Tesla continues to refine the Semi for widespread commercial deployment.
PTI is utilizing the Long Range version of the Semi, which features a three-motor powertrain and offers approximately 500 miles of range. The specification lists energy consumption at 1.7 kWh per mile with drive power reaching up to 800 kW. For this pilot, PTI aims to determine if the electric Class 8 tractor can meet its operational standards for reducing Scope 3 emissions without sacrificing economic efficiency or service reliability.
Tyler Ellison, CEO of PTI, noted that the partnership adds a new dimension to the company’s existing sustainable portfolio, which includes renewable natural gas and intermodal transport solutions. By evaluating the Semi, PTI seeks to offer clients additional avenues to decarbonize their supply chains.
This agreement follows similar strategic pilot programs involving other major fleet operators, such as PepsiCo and Frito-Lay. For Tesla, these collaborations provide real-world feedback to identify necessary improvements and validate the vehicle’s suitability for regional logistics. PTI, which has driven over 87 million miles using alternative fuel sources, views the transition to fully electric operations as a significant step in its sustainability strategy.
