BMW and Toyota Pilot Renewable Gasoline in Spanish Fleet Trial

Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft and Toyota Motor Corporation have initiated a six-month pilot program in Spain designed to evaluate the viability of renewable gasoline in standard internal combustion engines. The project, which also involves technology supplier Bosch and energy company Repsol, utilizes a fleet of approximately 20 existing BMW and Toyota vehicles. These cars will operate exclusively on Nexa 95, a renewable gasoline produced by Repsol.

The initiative aims to demonstrate that lower-carbon fuels can be integrated into the current transportation ecosystem without requiring vehicle owners to purchase new hardware or wait for new charging infrastructure. The fuel being tested is derived from renewable feedstocks, including used cooking oil and agricultural waste. While chemically similar to conventional gasoline and fully compatible with existing engines, this fuel is sourced from organic materials rather than fossil resources.

As part of the trial, Bosch is deploying its “Digital Fuel Twin” technology. This system tracks the fuel throughout the supply chain to verify that the vehicles are running exclusively on certified renewable product. The collaboration targets three main objectives: confirming that renewable gasoline can be distributed via existing public fuel stations, validating the digital tracking system, and proving that current internal combustion vehicles can run on the fuel without mechanical modifications.

This test comes as the automotive industry navigates differing regional regulations. While the focus in Europe remains on reducing carbon output from the existing fleet, publicly traded manufacturers continue to balance these investments with their global production strategies. BMW, currently trading with a market capitalization of roughly $35.13 billion, and Toyota, with a market cap of approximately $209.04 billion, are both exploring various pathways to reduce emissions, including battery electric vehicles and alternative fuels.

What to watch

  • Results from the six-month pilot regarding fuel compatibility and supply chain verification.
  • Upcoming European regulatory decisions regarding the role of renewable fuels in emission targets.
  • Production guidance updates from both automakers regarding internal combustion and electric vehicle mixes.
