Elon Musk Takes Control of APR Energy to Secure Power for AI Expansion

Documents recently filed with the Federal Trade Commission have revealed that Elon Musk has acquired New APR Energy, LLC. The transaction, identified by FTC number 202612350, lists Musk as the acquiring party and CF APR Super Holdings LLC as the seller. While the deal closed without a public announcement, its value is estimated to exceed $1 billion. This figure is derived from minority stakeholder disclosures, including a report indicating a 5 percent interest was sold for approximately $50.4 million.

New APR Energy specializes in rapidly deployable power infrastructure, maintaining a fleet of mobile gas and diesel turbines with a combined generation capacity exceeding 1.1 gigawatts. These modular units are designed for quick installation, ranging from 20 MW to over 500 MW. The firm provides comprehensive services for behind-the-meter power plants, catering to data centers, utilities, and industrial clients. Recently, the company deployed over 100 MW for a major AI hyperscaler to bridge gaps where grid interconnections face delays of two to five years.

The acquisition aligns with Musk’s increasing focus on the energy demands of artificial intelligence. Musk’s AI venture, xAI, requires substantial electricity for supercomputing clusters like the Colossus project. Owning a flexible generation asset allows for the deployment of power adjacent to data centers, mitigating reliance on strained existing infrastructure. This move also complements the energy generation and storage segment of Tesla, Inc.

Tesla currently operates in the Automotive and Energy Generation and Storage sectors. The stock was down 1.1% today, trading at $390.44 after a previous close of $394.80. The company has a market capitalization of approximately $1.49 trillion. While the press release details Musk’s personal acquisition, the strategic overlap with Tesla’s energy business is evident, as both entities address power generation and storage needs.

What to watch

  • Future announcements regarding the specific integration of APR Energy assets with xAI or Tesla infrastructure.
  • Upcoming earnings reports from Tesla for details on energy storage growth and demand.
  • Regulatory filings regarding the operational structure of New APR Energy under new ownership.
