General Motors to Demolish Former Pontiac Division HQ in Michigan

General Motors is proceeding with the demolition of a significant piece of automotive history in Pontiac, Michigan. The automaker has confirmed plans to tear down the former headquarters of its defunct Pontiac division, a structure that has stood vacant for several years as the company continues to rationalize its real estate holdings.

Known historically as One Pontiac Plaza, the mid-century administration building opened in 1970. During its prime, the facility housed the division’s sales, marketing, and public relations teams, serving as the command center during an era when models like the GTO and Trans Am defined American performance culture. Although the building is often linked to division head John DeLorean, he had transitioned to Chevrolet before the building officially opened.

The structure, later referred to as Pontiac Engineering Center Building A, has remained unoccupied since 2020. The Pontiac brand itself ceased vehicle production in 2010 before being officially phased out by GM. The decision to remove the building is part of a broader strategy to streamline the automaker’s physical footprint. GM has not yet announced specific plans for the site following the demolition.

Local historians and enthusiasts have expressed regret over the loss. Terry Connolly, chairman of the Pontiac Transportation Museum and a retired engineer from the division, noted to local media that the building remains a symbol of the brand’s most successful years.

Currently, General Motors maintains a market capitalization of approximately $69.43 billion. The company’s stock was trading down 0.19% at midday, with shares priced at $77.55.
