Next-Generation BMW M3 Spied Testing With Hybrid Six-Cylinder Engine

Development of the upcoming Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft M3 has accelerated as prototypes have been spotted tackling the Nürburgring. The high-performance sedan, slated to arrive in 2028, is transitioning to a new phase of validation ahead of its market debut.

Despite the industry’s broader pivot toward electrification, the next M3 will retain an internal combustion powertrain. BMW M CEO Frank Van Meel has confirmed the vehicle will utilize an updated twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. To meet stringent Euro 7 emission standards, the powerplant incorporates “BMW M Ignite” technology, designed to optimize combustion cleanliness and efficiency. This updated engine is currently being rolled out to the existing M3 and M4 lineups, producing outputs of 473 horsepower, 503 horsepower, and 523 horsepower depending on the trim.

While the core engine outputs are expected to remain consistent with current figures, the redesigned M3 will introduce a new mild-hybrid system. This integration aims to enhance both performance metrics and fuel economy. Unlike the recently introduced plug-in hybrid M5, the M3 is not expected to feature a plug-in architecture.

Visually, the prototype suggests a significant shift in styling influenced by the company’s Neue Klasse design language. The front fascia appears to draw inspiration from the electric M concept, featuring revised bumpers and air intakes. Notably, the test vehicle lacks a traditional kidney grille, a surprising choice for a combustion-powered model. The rear maintains a performance-oriented aesthetic with four tailpipes, signaling the continued presence of the gasoline engine.

What to watch

  • Official debut timeline for the 2028 model year.
  • Specific performance specifications for the mild-hybrid system.
  • Production ramp-up of the updated S58 engine across the M portfolio.
