Volkswagen Unveils High-Tech E-Bike Line Featuring Radar and Smart Displays
Tesla, Inc. and other major automakers have long utilized radar and cameras to improve vehicle safety, but Volkswagen is now bringing similar automotive-grade technology to the cycling sector. Through a licensing partnership with premium e-bike manufacturer n+, Volkswagen has introduced a new range of electric bicycles designed to enhance rider awareness and interaction with traffic using advanced sensors and connectivity.
Rather than focusing solely on range or motor output, this new e-bike ecosystem prioritizes safety features typically found in modern passenger vehicles. The central component of this system, dubbed Smart View, integrates a rear-facing camera with radar technology to monitor the environment behind the cyclist. This setup allows riders to view a feed of approaching traffic on a display embedded in the handlebars, eliminating the need to physically turn around.
The inclusion of radar provides an additional layer of security by detecting vehicles closing in from the rear and issuing alerts to the rider. This technology addresses the challenges of urban mobility, where cyclists and drivers frequently compete for limited road space. By adapting driver-assistance concepts for two wheels, Volkswagen aims to reduce accidents caused by blind spots.
Beyond the onboard sensors, the system extends to the rider’s gear. The company is utilizing smart glasses and a connected helmet to create a comprehensive safety network. These wearables are designed to sync with the bike, potentially projecting navigation data or hazard warnings directly into the rider’s field of view. The system also incorporates Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), improving the bicycle’s visibility to other road users.
This initiative highlights the growing trend of automakers leveraging their technological expertise to expand into adjacent mobility markets. As urban congestion increases, the demand for safe, connected micro-mobility solutions continues to rise.
