Florida Officials Seek Overturn of Tesla’s $243 Million Autopilot Verdict

Tesla, Inc. is facing renewed legal pressure regarding a massive $243 million judgment rendered by a Miami jury over a fatal crash involving the company’s Autopilot software. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a brief with a federal appeals court seeking to completely erase the verdict.

The legal challenge, submitted on July 9 to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, argues that the judgment should be vacated entirely. Uthmeier is joined in the brief by the attorneys general of Alabama and Georgia. As an alternative to a full dismissal, the officials are requesting that if the verdict stands, the court should significantly reduce the $200 million in punitive damages. They propose capping these damages at three times the amount of compensatory damages awarded by the lower court.

This case highlights the ongoing regulatory and legal scrutiny surrounding advanced driver-assistance systems. For Tesla, which operates within the Consumer Cyclical sector as an auto manufacturer, large civil liabilities represent a persistent risk factor alongside its automotive and energy storage operations. The company’s market capitalization remains substantial, currently valued at approximately $1.49 trillion. However, shares saw a slight decline today, falling 1.36% to close at $374.85, down from a previous close of $380.03.

The outcome of this appeal could have broader implications for how manufacturers are penalized for crashes involving semi-autonomous driving technology. A reduction or reversal of the verdict would be a significant legal victory for the automaker, which has repeatedly defended the safety of its software features in court.
