Tesa Outlines Upcoming FSD Enhancements Focused on Memory and Driver Habits

Tesla, Inc. is preparing to deploy a series of updates to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software designed to reduce the frequency of driver interventions. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk provided additional context on the planned improvements, indicating that the system will soon evolve to recognize and adapt to specific user preferences rather than adhering to a uniform driving style.

The core of the upcoming update revolves around the vehicle’s ability to “remember” how a driver interacts with the system. According to communications from Musk, the FSD suite will begin logging specific manual corrections made by the driver. Over time, the software aims to replicate these behaviors, effectively creating a personalized driving profile that aligns with the owner’s habits.

A significant portion of the feedback addressed by Musk concerns highway navigation, specifically the usage of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and express lanes. While current software includes settings to enable these lanes, users have reported instances where the system unexpectedly exits them or fails to utilize them consistently. The update seeks to stabilize this behavior, ensuring the vehicle respects the driver’s desire to remain in carpool lanes when appropriate. Additionally, the changes may address issues related to lane discipline, such as “left lane camping,” which can create legal and safety concerns for drivers in states with strict passing laws.

However, the primary focus of the development effort appears to be on parking scenarios. Musk has previously identified parking as the leading cause for necessary driver interventions during FSD operation. The proposed enhancements are expected to go beyond merely improving the vehicle’s ability to maneuver into a space. Instead, the system will likely learn where a driver prefers to park, such as selecting a specific driveway in a multi-home setup, and their preferred method of entry, whether pulling in nose-first or backing in.

As of the current market session, Tesla is trading at $375.28, reflecting a decline of 1.25% from the previous close. The company retains a market capitalization of approximately $1.49 trillion.

What to watch

  • Official release notes for the next FSD software update confirming memory features.
  • Feedback from early adopters regarding the reduction in intervention rates.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings report for data on FSD adoption and revenue recognition.
