U.S. DOT Redirects $1.73 Billion in Grants to Roads and Bridges

The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced the allocation of $1.73 billion in infrastructure grants, marking a significant shift in federal funding priorities. The funding will be directed toward the repair and improvement of roads, bridges, and ports, moving away from the pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure projects that were favored under the previous administration’s RAISE program.

According to the agency, approximately 77 percent of the total funds, equating to about $1.3 billion, are designated for road and bridge projects located along critical transportation corridors. Additionally, maritime infrastructure is set to receive seven percent of the allocation, a notable increase from the roughly two percent allocated during the prior administration.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the realignment aims to support infrastructure that connects Americans to job opportunities and strengthens national security through port investments. The department confirmed that no funds from this round of BUILD grants will be utilized for bicycle lane projects. This represents a sharp departure from recent years, where roughly 20 percent of comparable federal funding was dedicated to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.

This policy change arrives as the broader automotive industry continues to navigate a shifting infrastructure landscape. Major global manufacturers such as Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft and Toyota Motor Corporation maintain diverse portfolios that include internal combustion and hybrid technologies. As the government emphasizes traditional transit corridors, the focus remains on maintaining the networks that support the majority of current vehicle traffic.

What to watch

  • Future announcements regarding specific project allocations under the BUILD grants.
  • Earnings reports from infrastructure and construction suppliers benefiting from increased road spending.
  • Updates on federal autonomous vehicle testing guidelines related to smart infrastructure.
