Development is underway for the next iteration of Kia’s best-selling crossover. Spy photographers have captured the upcoming Sportage undergoing testing in Europe, signaling that the automaker is preparing to launch a significant update to its popular compact SUV. The vehicle is expected to debut in time for the 2028 model year.

While the prototype is heavily camouflaged, the visible bodywork suggests a shift in design philosophy. The new model appears to be moving away from the curvaceous styling of the current generation in favor of a more rugged, linear aesthetic. This approach mirrors the design language found on the brand’s larger Telluride and the smaller Seltos, characterized by a taller and more upright front end. The profile reveals a flatter beltline and a more angular A-pillar, contributing to a boxier overall silhouette.

Up front, the camouflage hides specific details, but the configuration points to split lighting units. The headlights are positioned mid-mounted at the outer edges of a wide grille, accompanied by a prominent horizontal light bar. The lower intake features a central sensor pod, indicating the continued inclusion of advanced driver-assistance systems. The test vehicle also showcased 18-inch wheels with a two-tone design and thicker fender flares, reinforcing the more robust appearance.
