Volkswagen Abandons Range-Extender ID. Buzz Plans, Eyes New Multi-Energy Platform

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has confirmed that it investigated equipping the ID. Buzz with a range-extending combustion engine but ultimately scrapped the idea due to packaging constraints. Speaking with Australian media, CEO Stefan Mecha acknowledged that while the concept was explored, the physical limitations of the vehicle’s architecture made the project unfeasible.

The ID. Buzz is built on the Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten (MEB) platform, a chassis designed exclusively for battery-electric vehicles. The van’s short overhangs and the dense packaging of its electric drivetrain left no viable space to accommodate a gasoline backup motor. Installing an internal combustion engine would have necessitated a substantial and costly redesign of the underlying structure.

This engineering decision underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to keeping the ID. Buzz a pure electric vehicle. The move comes as the company navigates a complex market for electric vans. Volkswagen reported global sales of 60,700 units of the ID. Buzz in 2025, doubling the volume from 2024. However, North American demand remains a challenge, with only 6,140 units sold in the region last year. In response to softer-than-expected sales, the automaker bypassed the 2026 model year in the United States to manage inventory, planning a return for the 2027 model year with minor updates.

Looking beyond the current ID. Buzz, Mecha outlined a strategic shift to address “costly platform fragmentation” within the company’s light commercial vehicle (LCV) portfolio. Volkswagen is developing a new “Space” platform intended to underpin future vans. This multi-energy architecture is designed to reduce complexity and manufacturing costs by accommodating various powertrain types within a single unibody structure.
