Mercedes-Benz Pledges to Restore Physical Controls After User Feedback
Mercedes-Benz Group AG is adjusting its interior design philosophy following public criticism regarding the removal of physical buttons. Chief Executive Officer Ola Källenius recently admitted that the automaker may have prioritized technology over usability, acknowledging that the industry’s shift toward digital-only interfaces went too far.
“Sometimes you get a bit ahead of yourself and do technology for the sake of technology and maybe forget a little bit about the customer,” Källenius stated, as reported by Autocar. He confirmed that the company intends to reintroduce “the most sensible buttons” in future models.
The move comes as consumers and reviewers have expressed frustration with complex touchscreen menus and the absence of tactile controls for essential functions. The CEO noted that while large displays remain a part of the industry’s trajectory, the sector has hit a “low button” point. Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft, Mercedes’ primary rival, has faced similar scrutiny for its reliance on touch-based interfaces.
Implementing this change will not be immediate. Källenius indicated that while buttons are already returning to steering wheels, the full product cycle update takes time due to the long lead times involved in vehicle development. As of the latest market snapshot, Mercedes-Benz Group shares are trading lower, reflecting broader trends in the consumer cyclical sector.
