Ford Issues Four New Recalls, Including One Covering Over 223,000 F-150s With Fuel Tank Concerns
Ford Motor Company has announced four fresh recalls, three of which involve its flagship F-150 pickup, in the latest round of safety campaigns for the automaker this year.
The largest campaign covers 223,472 F-150 trucks from the 2023 through 2027 model years. According to the filing, the fuel tanks on these trucks may not be properly secured, creating a risk of fuel leaks or, in the worst case, the tank separating from the vehicle while it is being driven.
Ford traced the problem to assembly: the front fuel tank strap T-slots were not fully seated into the truck’s frame rail during production. The company learned of the issue in July and has logged 16 warranty claims tied to the defect. Dealers will inspect affected trucks and replace the fuel tank straps where necessary, with owner notifications scheduled to go out later this month.
Transit Vans Recalled Over Seat Belt Reminder Fault
The fourth recall affects 1,945 Transit vans from the 2026 and 2027 model years. These vehicles use a wireless seat belt reminder system that may fail to correctly indicate when rear-seat passengers are unbuckled.
Ford identified the issue in July and traced it to an End of Line testing device supplied by Magna International. A status check command in the test equipment overlapped with the wireless reminder system’s pre-activated polling signal, placing the system into what Ford describes as a permanent error state. The automaker has received two field reports related to the problem.
Because a remedy is not yet available, affected Transit vans are under a delivery hold while dealers wait for replacement seat belt buckles.
A Busy Year for Recalls
The announcements bring Ford’s total recall campaigns to 71 for the year — eight more than Hyundai Motor, Toyota Motor, and General Motors combined, according to the source report. The volume of campaigns comes even as Ford highlights strong showings in initial quality studies.
Ford shares closed at $13.86, down 0.7% from the prior close of $13.9583, while Magna shares ended the session at $64.89, off 1.88%.
What to watch
- Owner notification letters for the F-150 fuel tank strap recall, expected later this month.
- Availability of the replacement buckles needed to lift the delivery hold on affected Transit vans.
- Ford’s future NHTSA filings, which will show whether additional campaigns are added to the year’s total.
- Ford’s next quarterly earnings report for any commentary on warranty costs.
