Li Auto Unveils i9 SUV in Bid to Strengthen Premium EV Lineup

Li Auto has introduced the i9, a new premium sport utility vehicle that expands the Chinese electric vehicle maker’s portfolio of high-end models. The launch marks another step in the company’s strategy of targeting affluent buyers in China’s competitive energy vehicle market, where it has built its reputation on extended-range and battery-electric SUVs and multipurpose vehicles.

The company designs, develops, manufactures, and sells premium smart electric vehicles in the People’s Republic of China, with a product line spanning SUVs and MPVs. Adding the i9 to that lineup gives Li Auto another entry in the premium segment, where it competes with both domestic startups and established international luxury brands accelerating their own electrification plans in China.

Investors took note of the announcement. Shares of Li Auto traded at $12.09 in recent activity, up 2.68% from the prior close of $11.77, valuing the company at roughly $11.5 billion. The stock, classified in the Consumer Cyclical sector under the Auto Manufacturers industry, has been sensitive to news on new model launches and delivery momentum.

The premium SUV push comes at a pivotal moment for China’s NEV sector. Price competition among domestic manufacturers has intensified, and companies with established premium positioning have sought to defend margins through differentiated technology, including advanced driver-assistance features and in-cabin smart systems — areas where Li Auto has historically emphasized family-oriented design and range flexibility.

For Li Auto, the i9’s success will likely hinge on how well it converts brand interest into orders against rivals launching competing models in the same price bracket. The launch also adds to the company’s manufacturing and delivery execution agenda, as scaling production of a new model typically brings near-term cost pressures even as it broadens revenue potential.

What to watch

  • Official ordering and delivery timelines for the i9, and any early demand indicators from the launch event.
  • Li Auto’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, including delivery guidance that reflects the new model.
  • Monthly China NEV registration and insurance data showing the i9’s early sales performance.
  • Competitive responses from other premium EV makers in the same SUV segment.
