Finally: The Tesla Roadster Is About To Be Revealed

We’re counting down to what should be the official reveal of the new Tesla Roadster 2. Thursday night at 8:55 eastern, Tesla will show the world what it has been working on (or not?) for the better part of a decade.

Yep, it has really been that long. Nine years ago, Elon Musk announced that Tesla was building a second-generation Roadster. We’ve elected two presidents (among a few other things) since he shot “Starman” into the endless vacuum in the Roadster 2.0 concept, and yet Tesla seems no closer to actually releasing the thing than it was way back in 2017. Forget “Starman,” this is starting to sound more like Star Citizen.

Musk’s bold claims about the still-hypothetical Roadster 2.0 haven’t exactly inspired confidence that any of this is real. Musk has hinted at absolutely insane acceleration (0-60 in under a second), prompting speculation that the car will employ something besides electric motors. Tesla’s teasers on social media have been leaning hard into the thruster theory, as you can see from the teaser image in Tesla’s livestream post (below).

Others have suggested it might be a VTOL system similar to the DeLorean’s from Back to the Future. Tonight’s reveal was scheduled for 19:55 central time, after all. Anyone care to wager on whether Musk says “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads” at some point during his keynote? An outdoor reveal opens up several potential avenues for Musk’s trademark awkward showmanship.

Will tonight’s unveiling be a prelude to another decade of broken promises, or will we finally see a car this time? We’ll keep this post updated throughout the evening with everything we’re learning from Tesla’s live event.
