What’s Next for Fleet? Safety, AI & Industry Recognition | AF News Recap

Could your company’s workplace culture actually be encouraging distracted driving?

Most fleet operations have policies addressing phone use and other distractions behind the wheel. But a written policy doesn’t necessarily reflect what employees experience on the road.

In a conversation with Automotive Fleet, Jacy Good and Steve Johnson, co-founders of the distracted-driving awareness organization Hang Up and Drive, explained how workplace expectations can unintentionally encourage risky behavior.

We’re also looking ahead at what could shape the next era of fleet management.

Inspiration Fleet founder and CEO Josh Green discussed how electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving technology could change fleet operations in the years ahead.

While electrification continues to develop across different fleet applications, Green emphasized the importance of matching vehicles and charging infrastructure to operational needs rather than treating EV adoption as a one-size-fits-all solution.

AI represents another area of change. AI tools are already helping organizations analyze large amounts of fleet data, identify trends, and generate reports more quickly. Green expects those capabilities to expand as fleet technology platforms become more connected.

He also identified autonomous vehicles as a potentially significant development for commercial fleets. In his view, autonomous technology could eventually change how vehicles travel between employee homes, company facilities, charging locations, and jobsites.

The larger takeaway is that fleet managers may need to reconsider longstanding procurement processes, technology partnerships, and operational strategies as new capabilities become available.

And finally, what does it actually take to win a fleet industry award?

The first step is documenting results. Rather than simply stating that a fleet reduced expenses or improved safety, successful nominations explain the challenge, describe the actions taken, and quantify the outcome.

That might mean demonstrating cost savings, reductions in preventable crashes, improved maintenance compliance, or measurable gains in productivity.

The advice is to start documenting achievements throughout the year instead of waiting until nomination season.

Whether it’s creating a workplace where drivers feel comfortable disconnecting, evaluating emerging technology, or demonstrating measurable business impact, fleet managers have an important role in shaping what comes next.
