2027 Nissan Pathfinder Toasts to 40 Years with Special Edition Trim

October 19, 2026 · by APW Pipeline
  • The 2027 Nissan Pathfinder turns 40 and gets a Special Edition trim with a bold black-and-burgundy interior that references the first generation’s upholstery.
  • The Pathfinder Special Edition also features 20-inch wheels, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and a higher towing capacity.
  • The 2027 Pathfinder goes on sale next month, with the front-wheel-drive Special Edition starting at $48,965, and the all-wheel-drive version starting at $50,965.

Nissan has officially sold 2 million Pathfinders since its debut in 1986 for the 1987 model year. After 40 years of production, the Pathfinder is still a solid competitor in the mid-size SUV segment, though it’s grown a bit since its initial days as a compact two-door ute.

To celebrate its 40th birthday, the modern three-row SUV is getting all dressed up. Nissan’s 2027 Pathfinder Special Edition brings back iconic aspects of the first-generation Pathfinder to blend its storied past with the present moment.

The most recognizable throwback appears inside, which is covered in two-tone black-and-burgundy upholstery, similar to the 1987 model’s interior. Everything, from the seats to the door panels, gets a bold, contrasting color treatment. On the passenger-side dashboard, an embossed graphic highlights the Special Edition trim, along with the Pathfinder’s debut date.

The Special Edition treatment is a bit more subtle on the outside. At the front, upper air intakes on the heritage-inspired grille are lined in the same burgundy color as the inside. A badge mirroring the embossed graphic inside the car rests on the exterior C-pillar, and the Pathfinder lettering across the rear features burgundy accents as well.

The anniversary trim also comes with plenty of upgraded equipment, including black 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, second-row captain’s chairs, and rear door sunshades.

The Pathfinder Special Edition is powered by a 284-hp 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that drives either the front wheels or all four, depending on the model. Standard Pathfinder trims can tow up to 3500 pounds, but the upgraded towing package, which is included on the Special Edition trim, raises that limit to 6000 pounds.

Special Editions with front-wheel drive start at $48,965, while opting for all-wheel drive pushes its starting price up to $50,965. The new Special Edition sits at the higher end of the Pathfinder’s lineup, but it still sits below Platinum and Premium trims. New 2027 Pathfinders will go on sale next month.
