Instituto MBCBrasil Brings Brazil’s Low-Carbon Mobility Expertise to the Global Stage

Independent, multi-sector institute advancing low-carbon mobility through scientific research, industry expertise and solutions tailored to Brazil’s realities
SãO PAULO, SãO PAULO, BRAZIL, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Instituto MBCBrasil (Low-Carbon Mobility for Brazil Institute), an independent, multi-sector, non-profit organization dedicated to decarbonizing transport, is making its technical studies, experts and Brazilian case studies available to international discussions on climate, energy security and sustainable mobility.
The initiative reflects a simple premise: the energy transition is increasing the global relevance of countries that can combine renewable resources, industrial capacity, science and market scale. Brazil brings these assets together in a distinctive way, with decades of experience in biofuels, a predominantly renewable electricity mix, a strong automotive and capital goods industries, a large agro-industrial base and the scientific capacity to assess different decarbonization pathways.
“Brazil’s contribution to low-carbon mobility is not about one fuel being better than another. It is about showing, at scale, that different solutions can work together, from ethanol and biodiesel to biomethane, electrification and hybrids, each applied where it makes the most sense,” said José Eduardo Luzzi, Chairman of the Board of Instituto MBCBrasil. “We want to bring evidence, experts and real-world case studies to the international debate.”
Launched in 2025, Instituto MBCBrasil brings together companies and organizations from across the mobility, energy and industrial value chains. Rather than advocating for a single technology, the Institute operates under the principle of technology neutrality and assesses emissions across the full life cycle of each solution. This approach recognizes that ethanol, biodiesel, biogas, biomethane, electrification, hybrid solutions and other renewable sources are complementary, and that the best option depends on the application and on the reality of each market.
This perspective is particularly relevant for countries with strong agricultural bases, growing transport demand and waste management challenges. For many of them, Brazil’s experience offers practical lessons on how renewable fuels and new vehicle technologies can coexist, strengthening energy security while reducing exposure to fossil fuel price volatility.
A recent example of the Institute’s work is the international study From Waste to Wheels – Turning Organic Waste into Renewable Fuel for Transport, launched in September 2026. Commissioned by Instituto MBCBrasil and developed by researchers from the University of São Paulo (USP), the Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI), the Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC) and the Mauá Institute of Technology, the study gathers scientific and economic evidence on the use of biomethane in road transport, with a focus on heavy-duty and long-haul vehicles.
The study estimates the global sustainable potential for biogas and biomethane to be around 1 trillion cubic meters per year. In Brazil, the sugarcane and bioenergy sector alone could produce 41.4 billion cubic meters per year, yet less than 2% of that potential is currently used. The research also shows that, according to the literature reviewed, biomethane can reduce well-to-wheels CO₂-equivalent emissions by 45% to 75% compared with diesel, pointing to significant decarbonization potential in heavy transport.
Beyond the numbers, the study illustrates how a single solution can connect climate action, energy security, waste treatment, agribusiness, industry and technology, turning environmental liabilities into energy, economic activity and new opportunities for international cooperation.
Instituto MBCBrasil acts as a bridge between scientific knowledge, industrial experience and public policy. To support international dialogue, the Institute can provide technical studies and executive summaries on mobility decarbonization pathways, as well as academic, industrial and sector experts for briefings, seminars and missions. It also offers Brazilian cases of large-scale deployment, with data on emissions, operations and economic viability, together with multilingual content and a multi-sector network able to connect international opportunities with companies, organizations and research centers in Brazil.
The Institute seeks to strengthen Brazil’s position not only as a major producer of renewable energy, but also as a source of technologies, industrial expertise and integrated solutions that can contribute to mobility decarbonization in other markets.
