Mazda Kills Off The CX-70 And Will Sell Two- And Three-Row CX-90s Instead

October 20, 2026 · by APW Pipeline

Mazda

Mazda’s SUV range in the U.S. has long felt a little convoluted with the CX-30, CX-50, CX-5, CX-70, and CX-90, all vying for attention and sales. For the 2027 model year, things will get slightly simpler with Mazda confirming it’s axing the CX-70 and replacing it with a new two-row version of the CX-90, selling it alongside the three-row CX-90 we’re familiar with.

Although the CX-70’s removal from Mazda’s line-up will help to streamline things, there will be fewer options for buyers. For 2027, there will be nine different trim levels of the CX-90 available, although only two of them are available with two rows, while all the others retain the three-row setup. All models have been fitted with a revised rear suspension crossmember to boost passenger comfort and address one of the most common complaints about the SUV. New colors of Navy Blue Mica, Aero Grey Metallic, Melting Copper Metallic, and Zircon Sand Metallic have also been added.

The 2027 Mazda CX-90 starts at $41,345

Mazda

Sitting at the base of the 2027 range is the CX-90 3.3 Turbo Select, starting at $41,345 (including a $1,645 destination and handling fee) — just a $400 increase from 2026. It uses Mazda’s lovely e-Skyactiv turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, delivering 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Key features of this model include leatherette seats, a seven-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seating for eight.

Next in the range is the CX-90 3.3 Turbo Preferred, priced from $45,495. It has the same powertrain and adds 21-inch silver metallic wheels, piano black touches, a different grille, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated seats in the second row. It also rocks a larger 12.3-inch center display.

The CX-90 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport is perhaps the most important model for 2027 as it’s available with eight seats, or seven seats with captain’s chairs in the second row. It’s also one of the two versions offered in the new two-row configuration. Prices for the two-row start at $48,525, while the three-row model is available from $49,675.

Mazda bets big on its 3.3-liter inline-six

Three other versions of the gas-powered model are available, badged the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus, 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport, and Turbo S Premium Plus, priced from $52,315, $55,185, and $59,616, respectively. The first of this trio is available in seven- and eight-seat guises and adds adaptive headlights, black or white Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 360-degree monitor.

As for the new CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport and 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus, they use Mazda’s upgraded 3.3-liter inline-six with 340 hp and 369 lb-ft on 91-octane fuel. The Premium Sport boasts special features including Sport, Off-Road, and Towing modes, in addition to a black exterior theme with a black grille, badging, and 21-inch black wheels. It also offers a Bose 12-speaker audio system, a power liftgate, panoramic moonroof, and all of Mazda’s i-Activsense safety features. The Turbo S Premium Sport is the second of the two 2027 CX-90 models available with either two rows or three rows. The 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus builds on it with an exclusive seven-seat configuration, Maple Wood interior trim, second-row ventilated seats, and a two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel.

There’s a plug-in hybrid, too

Mazda

Three plug-in hybrid versions of the CX-90 have also been announced, all use the same naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery, producing 323 hp and 369 lb-ft. The cheapest of this trio, the PHEV Preferred, is priced from $52,340 and uses twin 12.3-inch displays, ventilated and heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Positioned above it is the PHEV Premium Sport, commanding a more considerable $57,145.

For the extra $4,805, customers get blacked-out exterior elements, the option of second-row captain’s chairs, a head-up display, Bose audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Alexa Built-In. Last but not least in the 2027 range is the CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus that starts at $60,345. It includes 21-inch alloy wheels, upgraded headlights and taillights, Mazda’s Driver Personalization System, which suggests the perfect driving position, Nappa leather, and the full array of Mazda safety and driver assistance systems.
