Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia extend strategic technology partnership
Dive Brief:
- Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia are extending their technology partnership to jointly develop the next generation of advanced driver assist and autonomous driving systems that will integrate with Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with its MB.OS operating system, the automaker announced in an Oct. 16 press release.
- Future Mercedes-Benz vehicles will utilize Nvidia’s Hyperion in-vehicle compute platform and sensor architecture, as well as its Alpamayo full-stack software platform featuring AI reasoning capabilities that can make complex driving decisions and judgments that are more like those of a human driver to support SAE Level 4 automated driving, according to Nvidia.
- “Nvidia is our most important strategic partner in automated driving. Together, we developed the first Mercedes-Benz assistance system for urban point-to-point driving for the western world,” said Mercedes-Benz Group Chief Technology Officer Jörg Burzer, who also oversees development and procurement for the board of management. “The expansion of our partnership marks a significant milestone and reflects the mutual trust we have built over the years.”
Dive Insight:
As autonomous driving technology becomes more advanced, vehicles require enormous amounts of compute power, including for training AI models, simulating and validating driving behavior and real-time processing in the vehicle.
Nvidia is emerging as a key hardware supplier to automakers with its advanced hardware and AI-powered software products. Other OEMs using Nvidia hardware and software include General Motors, Hyundai Motor Group and Volvo Cars.
Nvidia’s Hyperion is a production-ready compute platform for OEMs supporting level 4-capable autonomous vehicles, including robotaxi fleets. It’s powered by dual Nvidia Drive AGX Thor high-performance processors and includes a standardized vehicle sensor suite and software that supports over-the-air updates.
The Hyperion platform also supports the training of AI models using continuous, large-scale data collection from vehicles operating in real-world environments, allowing Mercedes-Benz to improve its vehicles’ autonomous driving capabilities over time.
Mercedes-Benz will combine the Hyperion platform with Nvidia’s open-source Alpamayo platform, providing full-stack reasoning AI models and software to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles and robotaxis. Alpamayo also supports closed-loop testing of ADAS features and other autonomous driving technology in the safety of a simulated environment, according to Nvidia.
“Accelerated computing is giving vehicles the intelligence to understand the world and reason through complex driving situations,” said Ali Kani, vice president and general manager of the automotive team at Nvidia. “Together, we’re building on Nvidia Hyperion to bring that intelligence and full-stack safety to the road and make autonomous driving an everyday reality.”
Mercedes-Benz is also utilizing Nvidia’s Halos full-stack safety system, which provides system vehicle software safeguards and redundancy of critical vehicle sensors. Halos also supports safety validation across the entire vehicle development cycle, according to Nvidia.
In addition to Nvidia’s ongoing collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, in March 2025, General Motors announced it was partnering with Nvidia to deploy AI-powered technology in future vehicles — including for a “hands-off” version of its Cadillac Escalade IQ electric SUV built with Nvidia’s Drive AGX platform. And in March of this year, Hyundai Motor Group announced the expansion of a partnership with Nvidia to accelerate the deployment of its next-generation, Level 2 advanced driver assist systems and more advanced Level 4 autonomous driving technology.
Mercedes-Benz also uses Nvidia’s engineering simulation tools within its Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations 360 data platform and digital production ecosystem, per the release. The MO360 data platform can be used to create digital twins of the automaker’s vehicle manufacturing processes to gain insights from assembly and production planning to boost efficiency and quality across the company’s global production network.
