Magnaflow President Dan Paolone on the ‘Long-Term Play’

This episode of DriveTime features Dan Paolone, president, Magnaflow.

Paolone said Magnaflow’s family-owned heritage has shaped both its culture and its long-term approach to the market. Founded in 1981 by his uncle, Jerry Paolone, the company has operated around a “build it and stand by it” philosophy while emphasizing lasting relationships and accountability from design through manufacturing. While Magnaflow is widely associated with performance exhaust, Paolone emphasized that the company is fundamentally an emissions and exhaust business, with approximately 10,000 SKUs across catalytic converters and BRExhaust. That breadth, combined with its premium performance brands, gives Magnaflow a much broader aftermarket presence than its performance reputation alone might suggest, he explained.

Vertical integration is another key part of Magnaflow’s strategy. Paolone said the company invests consistently in employees, infrastructure and capital to maintain greater control from research and development through manufacturing and distribution. That approach also extends to data, an area where Magnaflow has made significant investments. By controlling more of the process and supply chain, Paolone said the company gains flexibility while supporting its long-term strategy. That philosophy reflects Magnaflow’s broader approach to business: Rather than managing quarter to quarter, the company views each quarter as another step toward executing a plan measured in years and decades.

Looking ahead, Paolone sees significant growth opportunities across Magnaflow’s existing emissions and exhaust business, BRExhaust and its expanding OE business. The company models vehicle trends through 2040 and expects hybrids, which still require catalytic converters and exhaust systems, to create additional opportunities. BRExhaust is also expanding by offering complete installation kits for repair shops that eliminate the need for welding, cutting or pipe bending, helping technicians complete more repairs in-house. On the OE side, Magnaflow sees an opportunity to serve lower-volume platforms, particularly vehicles in the 10,000- to 20,000-unit range, where its infrastructure and consumer-facing brand can make it an attractive partner.
