AI Adoption Runs Into Data Gaps in 2027 3PL Study

AI is already embedded in supply chain planning and execution, but data quality and legacy systems remain major barriers to broader adoption, according to the 2027 Third-Party Logistics Study.

Released during the CSCMP EDGE conference, the annual study also examines strategic partnerships, supply chain resilience, freight fraud, and cargo theft. The study was founded by Dr. John Langley, emeritus professor at the University of Tennessee, and is supported by Penske Logistics and NTT Data.

Shippers Lead in Predictive AI Use

Sixty-six percent of shippers surveyed said they use AI for predictive analytics and risk planning, compared with 43% of third-party logistics providers. 3PLs reported using AI for generative AI, machine learning, optimization, and autonomous decision-making.

Data quality and availability was the most common barrier to wider adoption, cited by 61% of respondents. Legacy system integration followed at 54%, while 46% cited budget constraints.

“The study shows data quality and legacy integration remain the top barriers to scaling AI, and that should be a wake-up call,” said Jonathan Whitaker, managing director, supply chain consulting, NTT Data Inc.
