What Treadwear Grades and Traction Ratings Mean

You’ve probably seen numbers and letters on a tire sidewall. But what do tire treadwear ratings and traction grades actually tell you?
What Tire Treadwear Ratings Measure
The treadwear grade compares how quickly a tire wore during controlled testing. Generally, a higher grade means the tread wore more slowly during that test. However, the grade is not a mileage guarantee.
Driving habits, tire maintenance, road conditions and climate all affect how long the tread will actually last.
What the Traction Rating Measures
The traction rating measures a tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement during controlled, straight-line braking tests. These ratings can help when comparing tires. However, they do not provide a complete picture of handling, cornering or performance in every condition.
Use treadwear and traction ratings as one part of the decision, along with the vehicle, the driver and how the tire will be used.
