- Hyundai Motor partners with Laksana to deliver 11 COUNTY EV buses to GGGI for the first electric bus public transportation pilot project in Bali, Indonesia
- Field quality assurance program to monitor vehicle quality and driving performance for project success
- Hyundai Motor aims to expand electrified vehicle business across Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region
BALI, Indonesia, October 23, 2026 — Hyundai Motor Company today announced that it has supplied 11 electric buses for Bali’s first electric public transportation initiative in partnership with local bus body manufacturer Laksana as it pushes to expand electrification across Indonesia.
Hyundai Motor participated in the launch ceremony for the Bali Sustainable Transportation System Official Development Assistance (ODA) Project on October 22, where it presented 11 units of 8-meter mid-size COUNTY EV buses. Hyundai Motor supplied the electric bus platforms, on which Laksana built the bodies.
Led by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in cooperation with Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE) of South Korea and the Government of Indonesia, the project is the first electric bus public transportation deployment initiative in Bali, a globally renowned tourism destination.
The project launch ceremony was attended by Rachmat Pambudy, Minister of National Development Planning of Indonesia; I Wayan Koster, Governor of Bali; Soon-gu Yoon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Indonesia; Rowan Fraser, Country Representative for Indonesia at GGGI; and Young Shin Kim, Vice President, Commercial Vehicle Total Body Development Group at Hyundai Motor Company.
“We are pleased to contribute to Bali’s transition toward sustainable transportation through the supply of electric buses. Building on our experience and growing presence in Indonesia, we aim to expand our electrified commercial vehicle business across key cities and regions in this country. Going forward, we will continue to pursue new business opportunities across the Asia-Pacific region, leveraging our competitive products and field support capabilities.” —Chul Youn Park, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Light Commercial Vehicle Business Division, Hyundai Motor Company
What Is the Background of the Project?
The project aims to support Indonesia’s climate change response and greenhouse gas emissions reduction efforts, while enhancing Bali’s image as a leading tourism destination. It also offers a public-private collaboration model for transportation projects in the Asia-Pacific region.
The project follows a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the South Korean and Indonesian governments last year to collaborate on transitioning Bali’s transportation system toward electric mobility. In the second half of 2025, GGGI led the tender for the supply of electric buses, and Hyundai Motor was selected as the supplier based on its electric vehicle quality, after-sales service capabilities, and experience in ODA transportation projects.
How Does the Bali Project Build on Hyundai Motor’s Work in Indonesia?
Hyundai Motor already supplied 11 COUNTY EV buses for public transportation service in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, in November 2024. With the Bali project supply, Hyundai Motor demonstrated its global expertise in electrification technology and commercial vehicles solutions.
The County EV for the Bali project is a 20-seat mid-size electric bus equipped with a 128kWh battery, offering a driving range of more than 200 km on a single full charge. Hyundai Motor will also support the initial deployment phase of the Bali project through a dedicated EV Bus Field Quality Assurance Program, including the establishment of a local field quality situation room. It will monitor vehicle quality and driving performance as the buses begin service, supporting the project’s operation alongside the vehicle supply.
Moving forward, Hyundai Motor aims to expand its electrified vehicle business in Indonesia, including in Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya and Medan. Building on this Indonesian presence, Hyundai Motor plans to expand regional market presence and establish competitive advantage in commercial vehicle electrification across Asia-Pacific markets, leveraging its product quality and after-sales support capabilities.
