Bad TPMS Sensor or ID Mismatch? Autel Shows How to Check

A TPMS warning light doesn’t automatically mean a sensor needs replacing. The problem could be a failing sensor, a communication issue or a sensor ID mismatch that requires a relearn. Identifying the cause before starting the repair can save time and unnecessary work.

In Episode 1 of this five-part TPMS series, we look at Autel‘s “Test. Know. Go.” approach to TPMS service and how Autel TPMS tools guide technicians through diagnosis, sensor replacement, relearn procedures and final verification.

The process begins with sensor activation. In less than a minute, an Autel TPMS tool can retrieve each sensor’s ID, tire pressure, temperature, battery condition and communication status. Connecting to the vehicle allows the tool to compare those readings with information stored in the TPMS control module.

A color-coded display helps technicians identify failed or failing sensors and ID mismatches, providing a clearer picture of the problem before removing a wheel or replacing a component.

When replacement is necessary, Autel’s programmable 1-Sensor provides another option. According to Autel, the sensor offers 99.9% coverage across domestic, Asian and European passenger vehicle applications, helping shops reduce the number of replacement sensors they need to stock.

But replacement isn’t always the answer. Autel TPMS tools also identify the appropriate stationary, automatic or OBD relearn procedures available for a vehicle, with on-screen instructions to guide technicians through the process.

The episode also covers an often-overlooked final step: verifying the repair. Once the replacement or relearn is complete, technicians activate the sensors again to confirm they’re communicating properly before returning the vehicle to the customer.
