The Best Ways to Communicate in the Alignment Bay

The Best Ways to Communicate in the Alignment Bay

You can have the best alignment rack, sensors and software in town. But poor alignment communication can still affect the results.

So, how can service advisors and technicians can improve communication in the alignment bay?

Alignment Communication Starts With the Repair Order

Never hand a technician a repair order that only says, “customer requests alignment” or “perform alignment.”

The repair order should explain why the customer believes the vehicle needs an alignment. Maybe the vehicle pulls or the steering wheel is off-center. The customer may have noticed uneven tire wear. Suspension parts also may have been replaced, or the vehicle may have hit something in the road.

Those details matter because an alignment is not always the complete answer. The technician needs enough information to inspect the right areas and understand what the customer expects.

That starts with listening. Ask open-ended questions like, “What are you noticing?” or “What does it feel like?” These questions give customers room to describe the problem without steering them toward a specific diagnosis.

Sometimes, the best thing a service advisor can do is stay quiet and let the customer keep talking.

Explain the Alignment Service Clearly

Tell customers what the alignment does and what the technician will check or adjust. Explain how the service benefits the vehicle.

Avoid overwhelming customers with a long technical explanation. Customers do not need a lecture on alignment angles. They need to know that you understand the problem and have a clear plan to correct it. Good alignment communication builds trust and gives technicians better information. It also helps prevent comebacks.
