Turn times, prices rise faster for used EVs than gas & hybrid vehicles

Turn times, prices rise faster for used EVs than gas & hybrid vehicles

Prices for 1- to 5-year-old used electric vehicles have risen significantly faster than their hybrid and gas-powered counterparts in the last year, according to an analysis by iSeeCars.com.

Once thousands of dollars cheaper, used EVs are now close to $600 more expensive than gas vehicles.

Yet, they’re turning about 14% faster than hybrids and more than 23% faster than gas vehicles, iSeeCars said.

Furthermore, days on market for used EVs is down more than 10% year-over-year, compared to a 1.2% dip for hybrids and a near 20% rise for gas cars.

So, what gives?

“Used EVs have moved from selling slightly slower than gasoline vehicles to selling nearly two weeks faster in just one year,” iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer said in the analysis.

“Taken together, it’s clear the high fuel prices of the last seven months have driven a shift in used-car shopping behavior,” Brauer added.

Here’s how the data, which iSeeCars Research gathered through an analysis of more than 1.5 million used vehicles from ages 1 to 5, shakes out.

In September, the average price of a used EV was $32,533, up 9.8% year-over-year.  The average price on a used hybrid was $34,476, up 4.9%, according to iSeeCars.

Meanwhile, used gas vehicle prices have remained some stable (up 0.3%), coming in at $31,954.

What’s more gas vehicles (at $31,864) were $2,227 more expensive than used EVs a year ago. Now, they’re a $579 discount.

“These pricing shifts reflect significantly different year-over-year trends across drivetrains,” Brauer said. “Ongoing higher fuel prices are likely driving the shift, though the EV segment has also recovered from the demand turbulence caused by the loss of federal incentives a year ago.”

Heftier prices don’t appear to be slowing the turn times for used EVs, however.

Average days on market for used EVs last month was 41.9, which is down 10.1% year-over-year, the iSeeCars data shows. Hybrids are taking an average of 48.6 days to sell, down 1.2% from September 2025.

Days to turn on gas cars, however, have climbed 19.9% year-over-year, coming in at 54.8 days last month.

“Used EVs have moved from selling slightly slower than gasoline vehicles to selling nearly two weeks faster in just one year,” said Brauer. “That reversal, combined with substantially higher average prices, is one of the clearest signs of how dramatically the used car market has changed across drivetrain types.”

Dramatic changes certainly play out in the latest Carfax Used Car Index report, which shows a used EV and hybrid market pulled in different directions by two industry and geopolitical forces: an increase in off-lease volumes and the impact of gas prices from the war in Iran.

In an analysis, Carfax editor-in-chief Patrick Olsen notes that asking prices on these vehicles have declined from recent highs, noting that “it’s largely due to many coming off of leases that began in 2023, when there were additional incentives.”

Olsen continues, “That increased inventory supply is outstripping demand and, across all Hybrid and EV models, the average asking price on Carfax dropped more than $230 in October.

“But there’s a caveat: With gas prices remaining high because of the war with Iran, some used Hybrids and EVs are selling for more than new 2026 models. In these cases, buying the used version is not as good a deal,” he said.

For instance, the average price fetched by used Toyota RAV4 hybrids on Carfax listings is close to $49,000.

Albeit hard to find, the 2026 new edition of that same vehicle ranges from $32,000 to $43,000, Olsen said.

Another example: the average asking price on Carfax listings for a used Lexus RX500H is above $72,000 – well above the $58,000 MSRP for the base model of the new vehicle.
