Proper Tire Mounting Procedures

Proper tire mounting procedures can help prevent vibration, air loss, bead damage and damaged TPMS sensors. Technicians must understand their equipment, use approved lubrication and know where to apply pressure during mounting and demounting.

Rim clamp and pedestal tire changers require different mounting and demounting techniques. Technicians should follow the procedures specified for their equipment.

When breaking the bead away from the wheel, technicians should begin 90 or 180 degrees away from the valve stem or TPMS sensor. Applying pressure directly at the valve stem or sensor can cause damage and lead to an avoidable comeback.

Proper lubrication is also important. Technicians should apply an approved mounting lubricant to the tire bead to help it move smoothly along the wheel barrel. Insufficient lubrication is a common cause of bead damage during mounting and demounting.

The tire bead contains a metal band inside the tire’s inner lip. It creates the seal between the tire and wheel, allowing the assembly to hold air. Stretching, tearing or damaging this area can prevent the tire from sealing properly.

Tire Mounting Procedures for Bead Seating and Inspection

After the bead seats, technicians should fully deflate the tire before reinflating it to operating pressure. This allows the bead to settle evenly on the wheel and helps ensure proper tire centering.

Before mounting, technicians should clean the wheel surfaces and inspect the tire bead for existing damage. Driving while underinflated, rubbing curbs and hitting off-road obstacles can damage the bead before the vehicle reaches the shop.

Proper tire mounting requires technicians to follow equipment-specific procedures, protect TPMS sensors, apply sufficient approved lubricant and control inflation pressure. These steps help prevent tire damage and mounting-related problems.
