TIP Reports Progress on Decarbonization, Water Efficiency, Rubber Sourcing

The Tire Industry Project (TIP) released its annual sustainability report documenting member progress on key targets. TIP is a CEO-led initiative representing 10 major tire manufacturers. The report covers areas including decarbonization, water efficiency and responsible natural rubber sourcing.
Sustainability Driven: Key Performance Indicators for TIP Members 2021-2025 tracks performance across 16 environmental, social and governance KPIs. The indicators align with seven pathways in TIP’s Sector SDG Roadmap and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The publication provides sector-level data for policymakers, regulators and industry stakeholders. These stakeholders are involved in tire manufacturing, tire maintenance, tire repair and broader automotive repair operations.
“Transparency and collaboration are at the heart of TIP’s efforts to foster sustainability innovation in the tire sector,” said Dr How Yong Ng, adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore and a member of TIP’s Assurance Group. “This KPI report demonstrates how TIP members are translating their commitments into measurable results and driving meaningful advancement across the tire value chain. TIP has been monitoring progress against the SDGs for a decade, and it is encouraging to see how far members have come.”
TIP Sustainability Report Highlights Key Achievements
- Decarbonization: Emissions intensity decreased 4.9% since 2024 and 29.2% since 2021. Renewable electricity procurement reached 60.5%, up 6.5% from 2024.
- Water efficiency: Overall water withdrawals declined 5.7% from 2024 to 2025. Withdrawals from water-stressed areas fell 10.9% during the same period. Since 2021, withdrawals are down 18.4% overall and 35.2% in water-stressed areas.
- Responsible natural rubber sourcing: All members reported their responsible sourcing efforts to the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber. In addition, 90% implemented responsible sourcing policies across all materials used for tire production.
- Science-based targets: The share of members with validated science-based targets rose to 90%, up from 80% in 2024.
Research on Tire and Road Wear Particles
The report details TIP’s work to expand the evidence base on tire and road wear particles (TRWP), it said. In 2025, TIP funded five new TRWP projects and supported eight scientific papers, double the 2024 count. As of 2025, TIP-supported TRWP publications totaled 36 and received 796 citations, up 14% from 2024.
TIP also committed $2 million in grants through its first Open Call for Projects to accelerate independent research. In September 2025, TIP co-hosted the second Tire Emissions Research Conference with MIT. The third edition is scheduled for December 2026 in Cambridge.
Circularity Initiatives Support Tire Value Chain
The report also highlights the ELT Toolkit 2.0, the Interactive ELT Data Map and further work on PCR development. These resources are designed to support stakeholders across the tire value chain in advancing more circular tire systems, TIP said. Those stakeholders include tire sales and service providers.
TIP’s KPI reporting provides visibility into sector trends, priorities and areas for ongoing collaboration. These areas affect tire manufacturing operations and downstream tire service networks.
