After winning in its class among entry-level models (up to €25,000), the VW ID. Polo beat out strong international competition to take the top spot as German Car of the Year for 2027 among all vehicles.
The Volkswagen Group has won two years in a row with a compact EV. Last year, it was the Skoda Elroq.
Volkswagen opened orders for the ID. Polo with the 52 kWh battery at the end of April. In July, it added the entry-level model with the 37 kWh battery, starting at just €24,995 ($28,000) with a WLTP range of up to 207 miles (334 km).

With DC fast charging speeds of up to 90 kW, the ID. Polo with the 37 kWh battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes.

The prestigious award “confirms what the ID. Polo stands for,” VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said. He added the entry-level EV “brings electric mobility to where it can make the greatest impact: right into people’s everyday lives.”
Since orders opened at the end of April, Schäfer said “well over 50,000 people have ordered their ID. Polo.”
As the first of what the company calls “a true Volkswagen again,” the ID. Polo is the first to bear an established name and the brand’s new Pure Positive design language.

The jury includes nearly 50 German and international auto journalists, and the award is considered one of the most prestigious in the industry.
In other segments, electric cars swept the awards, with the Kia PV5 van winning in the compact class (€25,000 and €40,000), and Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric taking the top spot in the premium segment (€40,000 to €70,000). Hyundai’s electric sports car, the IONIQ 6 N, won German Performance Car 2027.

Martin Sander, the Group’s sales boss, said earlier this month the company is “seeing a significantly accelerated trend towards all-electric vehicles” in its home market.
VW Group’s Electric Urban Car Family has received nearly 150,000 orders after series production began in June. The lineup currently includes the VW ID. Polo and ID. Cross, plus the Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq, all based on the MEB+ platform.
While those in the US won’t see the entry-level ID. Polo, Volkswagen is set to launch the ID. Tiguan in early 2027 as a replacement for the ID.4.
