KAP Minerals, Cymat plan scandium-aluminum alloy venture

KAP Minerals and Cymat Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a proposed joint venture focused on producing scandium-aluminum master alloy in Canada.
The companies said the partnership would combine scandium oxide from KAP’s Kapuskasing critical minerals project with Cymat’s aluminum-processing technology to create advanced materials for aerospace, defence and manufacturing applications.
Scandium-aluminum alloys are used to improve strength, performance and weldability while reducing weight. The companies said the project would support the development of a domestic supply chain that converts Canadian critical minerals into value-added industrial materials.
The proposed venture would establish an integrated Ontario supply chain spanning scandium recovery, processing and master alloy production.
“By combining Northern Ontario scandium with Canadian manufacturing technology, KAP and Cymat are taking an important step toward building the sovereign industrial capacity that our automotive, aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing sectors need,” said Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.
The companies are targeting demonstration of commercial-grade scandium-aluminum alloy production by the end of 2027.
